Tell us about this catch:
It all started with a winning raffle ticket to hunt white seabass with Mike Feldman. He took us out on his boat and we worked the Point Loma kelp beds with hazy vis for most of the day without anything spotted. Just before calling it for the day, Dave suggested we hit his secret goat spot. On my first drop, I spotted what seemed like an ordinary sheephead slowly swimming away. I closed the distance with a few kicks, lined up, and let the shot fly from about 15–20 feet away. I smoked it through the head. It did a backflip and sunk to the sea floor. With my little remaining breath and fueled by the sudden adrenaline, I kicked over, grabbed it by the gills and returned to the surface. It was at the moment I grabbed it that I realized it was much bigger than I expected. When I broke the surface, Dave was already yelling from the boat: “That’s at least 20 pounds! Club record” Huge thanks to SDF for the opportunity, Mike for captaining a great boat, and Dave for putting us on the spot.
